Amazon and Microsoft team up
The two juggernauts have teamed up to provide consumers with Alexa and Cortana working side by side. Alexa will focus on all things you depend on Amazon for such as E-commerce and online streaming video. Cortana will be focused on things you depend on Microsoft for such as productivity and E-mail. With these two in sync, you will need to tell Alexa to summon Cortana and vice-versa.
With this partnership we see that companies are going to be focused on AI and voice technology moving forward. This is about making it easier for the user to accomplish things. Eventually we will be able to think things that happen for us. Imagine thinking about ordering some food, and then a driver shows up with your food 20 minutes later!
For now, we will have to be content with speaking to a machine that makes things happen.
Augmented reality is becoming a popular segment that consumers are looking at as well. This is a new technology that allows users to experience a different reality whether it be on glasses where visuals are programmed to appear. Augmented Reality also works on your phone. The most popular AR application to date has been Pokemon Go. With this game people were able to immerse themselves in a game without requiring a console.
The User can be out walking around and playing a game at the same time. Apple is getting a walking dead game like this where you can experience the Zombie apocalypse through your phone!
What is next?
In this small business blog we always encourage you to think about what is coming next. What will be needed for consumers using these new technologies? If you have a product now, then what will happen to it once these technologies become the normal way to do business?
Can you imagine ordering decorations for your house through an augmented reality program? You would simply point your phone at a space in your house, then Amazon would allow you to display the product you are looking at in the space your phone is pointed at!
This is not something that is ten years away. Within the next 3-5 years or earlier, this will be a possibility for consumers. What does this mean for your product? Systems like this will revolutionize the buying experience for consumers. It will save people from having to leave their house and go to the store.
The retail industry from a brick and mortar stand point is failing. This will accelerate that process.
What do we not know?
One thing we don’t know is how the voice technology will affect the way people search for things in the future. If you are looking for a gift online, and you ask Alexa for gift ideas, then what is she going to show you? This will make it impossible to get any sales without being on Amazon if someone is using Alexa. Google is also coming out with a competitive device, but it is unlikely to be as popular as Alexa given the jump Amazon has on the market right now.
These are some things to think about moving forward with your business. What are people going to need once these technologies become staples in our every day life? How can you satisfy that need? It is hard to know what people will need in the future, but if you can figure it out then you will no doubt make a lot of money on your product.
Think Steve Jobs and the I-pod. How did he know that we would all want that? His thinking was already wired to anticipate the future of technology.
