More on Thought
I wanted to go into more detail on thought. I started talking about it in This Post. There is a lot to discuss when we talk about the brain and how it functions within the body. Surprisingly the brain is an organ that is often over looked. As long as you have a thought you know that your brain is working in some capacity. What we need to understand is that the brain effects everything else within the body.
When you are stressed out, your body responds. Your blood pressure goes up, and you feel a certain level of anxiousness. You start sweating in some cases, if you have ever been stressed or nervous about anything then you can relate. The brain is causing this to happen based on how you think about a certain thing. If you and another person are facing the same exact problem, your brain will respond differently based on how you think about the upcoming problem or event.
Who is thinking?
Who is doing the thinking in your brain? The voice in your head is you right? This voice is your conscious mind, it is what you are aware of, and it is something that you can control. You can control your thoughts, but that doesn’t mean that you are always in full control if you don’t know how this effects the subconscious. When you think you have something to worry about, your subconscious provides a response within the body.
If you don’t like a person that you are talking to, your subconscious will express that negativity through your non-verbal cues. The way you move your hands or the expressions you make when the person is talking. Because we are narcissistic, the other person probably won’t even be aware of these signals.
Most people don’t take time to actually study their own mind. If they are alive, then that is pretty much all they need to know about their mind.
The things you think are influenced by what you read and hear. Basically the things you input into your brain will effect the thoughts of your brain. If all day long you are hearing about how beautiful the weather is outside, then you are going to want to be outside instead of doing whatever you are doing inside like working for example.
What is in Control?
Observe this diagram:
You may be controlling the thoughts you have, what you read and what you hear, but the response to that stimuli is dictated by the subconscious. For example, A republican might get angry when they see a picture of Hillary Clinton. Some even have their heart rate go up just seeing her. I can’t think of an election that was so polarizing as the 2016 election in the United States.
Most of the time these people don’t know anything about Hillary other than that she is a democrat. That is enough for some to illicit a negative response. This usually comes from how a person was raised versus the information they know.
When you read things with an open mind you learn different view points of stimuli within the world. A person who is aware of how the mind works is more likely to be objective with information presented.
Mindfulness is something that has become popular recently. This is basically being aware of your mind. Awareness into how it operates and what is happening internally. This practice takes work because it is hard to stop and think about your surroundings especially in the world of constant information. Decades ago, this was much easier to do. They didn’t have a term like mindfulness because there wasn’t so many distractions, it was probably just known as thinking.
The mindful person is less bothered by external stimuli that don’t effect them personally. When you go for a job interview, a natural reaction is to get nervous. The mindful person will accept the nervousness as natural and live with it. Once nervousness accepted as natural and uncontrollable then it quickly subsides after it is experienced for a period of time. How long will vary for each person.
The importance of mindfulness lies in what you put into your brain. Negative thoughts can be detrimental to your mental state, the mindful person will be aware of this. Positive thinking is not just about thinking positive all the time while ignoring the situation you are in. Being positive is good because in puts our mind in a better state than being negative does. A simple example of thinking everything is ok versus thinking everything is going to hell is an easy way to look at the differences though it is actually much more complex than this.
Taking this example, when you think everything is ok in your world then your body is not responding to stimuli in a negative way. You aren’t stressed, no anxiety and no high blood pressure. But if you think everything is going to hell then you will likely have high blood pressure, be stressed out etc…
The question you have to ask yourself is, are you in danger or not? Are you going to die or not? Most people worry about things that will happen in the future. The important thing to remember about the future is that the present you are in was at one time your future. You once worried about the present when it was your future. So, in the past you worried about your future which is now your present. Right now you are here and alive, how did you get here? The thing you worried about in the past didn’t kill you nor will the thing you are worrying about now kill you in the future.
Do not let these external factors control your mind because the negative reactions they illicit will not help you deal with them in the first place. If you don’t have enough money to pay something you need for example, is worrying about the payment in the future going to change the fact that you don’t have enough money now? No, but worrying is natural, so when you start to worry about the future, take steps to ensure that their isn’t anything to worry about.
Every person has the capacity to control their own destiny, whether or not they believe this will be the difference in how their destiny turns out. Nature doesn’t care who you are, but Nature will swallow those that don’t adapt to circumstance. All through time we have seen men and women who adapt and those who fail to adapt. Your dilemma isn’t anything to worry about because millions before you have faced that dilemma head on and lived. So you can take comfort that you will do the same.
