The fear that humans have of automation is not necessarily a new one. With the advances in technology it feels as though everything will be automated soon, and humans will nothing left to do in this world. It is strange that we fear automation when throughout history we have been inventing things to automate things in our lives. We like for things to get done faster in almost all facets of our life. If we take an hour to drive to work, then we would prefer the drive be 5 minutes. We would also prefer to work from home so there is no commute. The problem with that is if we worked from home, then we would want to work less from home.
Striving to do Less
With that said it does seem like humans only strive to do less. We strive to do less work and have more time to ourselves. The concern with automation arises when it effects our job individually. People are now using Ubereats and Amazon more to save them time from going to a restaurant or a store. The people using these applications give no regard to the person working at the restaurant or store who is effected by these applications. Humans prefer quick gratification than delayed gratification every time, this is part of the nature of human beings.
This is why people complaining that robots are going to take their jobs is somewhat strange because a robot was invented to put someone out of work. A robot saves a company time and labor. A company exists to make money. Any time there is an opportunity to save money, it is against the very goals of companies to not seize that opportunity. If you don’t understand this then you probably don’t have a company.
The inventions that we have come up with to facilitate our own need to do less work are numerous. The typewriter saved us from having to write everything by hand. The computer saved us from countless tasks like mailing letters for example. At first you would have to write the letter by hand, then go to the post office and mail the letter to its recipient. The type writer eliminated the step of writing things by hand. The computer eliminated the step of going to the post office, really the internet and computer combined.
The automatic stop light is an invention that eliminated jobs as well. Before the traffic light we know today existed, people operated the traffic lights by hand. There are stories of people like Jesse Livermore in New York never having to stop at a light because they would change the light to green when they saw him approaching.
Why should you care?
If you are looking to make money by starting a business. You need to create something that helps people do less mundane tasks in their daily life. A mundane task is one that we don’t even really think about doing. We just do these tasks as part of our daily routine. The automatic car will replace the mundane task of driving as an example. The automatic transmission replaced the mundane task of switching gears and using a clutch. If you can invent something that reads our minds and puts our thoughts into our phone when we are about to send a text, that will be a billion dollar invention.
Examine your life and the lives of others to see what they do all all the time and what could be made easier? More on this subject to come.
